Iwollo is a small rural community of about a thousand inhabitants, roughly 45 minutes from Enugu city. Like many similar communities across Nigeria, it faces significant health deficiencies: limited access to trained medical professionals, unaffordable medicines, and no nearby facility for even basic diagnostic or preventive care.
In 2005, Niger Foundation Hospital, with the vital support of Fundación Zabalketa and a community of generous donors, established the Iwollo Rural Health Centre. The facility was purpose-built for its setting: a spacious waiting room, consulting rooms, a room for simple clinical interventions, a well-stocked pharmacy, and a small lecture room for health education.
In the two decades since, the Centre has recorded over 50,000 patient visits, a number that speaks not just to scale, but to the depth of need that existed, and the trust the community has placed in this initiative.

Every service at Iwollo is built around one principle: cost must never prevent someone from getting the care they need. Consultations are free. Medicines are heavily subsidised (many at cost), and free where possible. Vaccines are provided at no charge.
Free Medical Consultation Qualified physicians provide diagnosis and treatment for common illnesses, making skilled clinical care a routine reality for Iwollo's residents.

Subsidised Pharmacy A well-stocked dispensary ensures essential drugs are always available, at heavily subsidised rates, and freely dispensed to some who cannot afford even that.
Immunisation Services Routine vaccinations for children and adults, most offered completely free, protecting the most vulnerable from preventable disease.

Basic Laboratory Services On-site diagnostic testing to support accurate clinical decisions, enabling treatment that is appropriate and timely without requiring travel to the city.
Community Outreaches Regular outreach programmes bring free health screening and free medication to residents of Iwollo and surrounding communities beyond the clinic's walls.
Beyond day-to-day clinical services, NFH runs focused programmes targeting specific disease burdens in the community, partnering with pharmaceutical companies and specialist hospital units to extend the reach of care.
